Good Luck Symbols and Charms

There are many different good luck symbols and charms around the world and though many of us are probably familiar with those from our own culture there are some others which may be quite surprising. Some things which depict good luck in one country may be decidedly bad luck in another.

If a black cat crosses your path in England or in Japan it is considered to be very good luck . . . however if the same thing happens in the United States, Spain and other European countries this is regarded to be very bad luck. Here are a few more:

Scarabs – are lucky beetles, or at least they were considered to be so to Ancient Egyptians.

Rainbows – are lucky with dream chasers believing that there will be a pot of gold buried where it meets the earth. Another lucky thing about the rainbow is that it have seven colors and seven is thought to be a very lucky number, the luck sheltering beneath the overhead part of the number.
Saint Christopher – is the patron saint for travelers so many Catholics will hang a St Christopher from their rear view mirror or keep it in the glove compartment of their car to keep them safe throughout their journey. Buddha – this is a lucky statue or charm which is supposed to bring even more luck just by rubbing the belly of the Buddha.
Red Bats – are lucky in some parts of China, they are thought to have the ability to protect from evil. If you happen to see five red bats this can represent five good fortunes – health, longevity, love, virtue and wealth.

Pigs – many Germanic cultures consider the pig to be a very lucky creature.
Tortoises – are a symbol of good luck when it comes to the ancient art of decorating with Feng Shui.
Elephants – are a good luck charm across the United States, Canada and England. The God of Luck in the Hindu faith is the elephant or the Ganesha.
Dolphins – are said to bring good fortune in many different cultures from around the world. This includes Egypt, Rome, Ancient Greece and Sumer. It is a revered symbol for protection for Christians as well as Native Americans.
Horseshoes – bring good luck when they are hung above a doorway or on the wall of a home. One theory is that horseshoes were traditionally made by blacksmiths which in itself is considered to be a very lucky trade.
